🎨 June Mills
Larrakia Elder June Mills is an artist, musician and community advocate whose work is rooted in the Country on which Darwin stands. Her paintings, songs and public artworks explore relationships between people, landscape and belonging. Her contribution to a public art project at Parap used the dangalaba, or crocodile, to express connections between saltwater and freshwater. She has also worked with young people, linking creative activity with cultural learning. Her Darwin association is a continuing relationship with Country, family and community.
🏅 Michael Long
Michael Long was born and raised in Darwin and played for St Mary’s before becoming an Essendon footballer. A gifted player, he won the 1993 Norm Smith Medal for his grand-final performance. His influence extended beyond football: his formal complaint about racial vilification in 1995 helped force the game to confront racism. Later advocacy continued that public role. Darwin’s football community belongs to the foundations of a career remembered for both sporting skill and the determination to demand better treatment for Aboriginal people.
